Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! We hope you have had an enjoyable summer holiday! In the first term back our topic is ‘Buildings’. Within this topic we will be learning about the structures and shapes of buildings around the world. We will be making links with our topic and be looking to improve our outside play area, building bird houses and a picnic table.

We will be making links with our topic and be looking to improve our outside play area, building bird houses and a picnic table. If you find any old pallets, large pieces of wood, old Lego or toys, then please let your child’s new class teacher know. Additionally, if you’ve been on holiday over the summer and spotted any unusual buildings, please bring in any photographs so these can be displayed in your child’s classroom. During this topic we are going to take a walk around our local community to explore different types of buildings

In English this term we will be looking at fairy tale stories and learning to read and write our own versions. We will continue to practise handwriting and fine motor skills daily, so that your children develop speed and confidence with their writing.

Maths will focus on number order and place value. We will learn to use new addition and subtraction skills, alongside developing our times tables.

PE will be on a Wednesday for both 1SJ and 1JF. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit and water bottle in school on this day.

A termly ‘Family Homework’ challenge will be set, details of which will be displayed by your child’s classroom door. This term we are setting the children the challenge of creating a building of the future! You can use paints, collage materials or junk modelling to make your creations look as futuristic as possible. One piece of homework each term across the school will receive a prize of a £20 Smyths gift voucher.
